S Tel Set to Invest Rs. 700 Cr In 3G Mobile Services

Posted: 26 May 2010 03:29 AM PDT

STel, the youngest telecom operator to have bagged 3G licenses in the recent spectrum auctions in India, today announced its plans to invest Rs. 700 crores for acquisition of 3G spectrum and roll out of services.

The company plans to raise Rs. 338 crores through a 1:1 debt to equity ratio towards license fee payment for the three circles of Bihar & Jharkhand, Odisha and Himachal Pradesh.

S Tel is the only new operator to have bid consistently and won 3G spectrum at a high success rate, leading to acquisition of licenses in all three circles of its current operations. The debt is already tied up with Indian nationalized banks via a bridge loan and the company is set to meet the timelines stipulated by DOT.

Commenting on the acquisition of the licenses, Mr. Shamik Das, Chief Executive Officer, S Tel said "Our business strategy is aimed at making benefits of mobility accessible to a large section of society in the six growth circles. Our commitment to consumers is entrenched in our company vision. Despite being a new operator which has launched services in India in the last six months, we had aggressively bid for 3G spectrum and won licenses in three circles.

He also said “We view 3G technologies as important elements for advancing socio-economic development, bridging the digital divide that exists in certain regions especially where tele density and Internet penetration are low. Strategically, our investment in 3G spectrum is targeted at being ready for all future services. Our network is compliant with third generation standards and we are well geared to keep pace with the adoption of this technology."

Talking about the company’s future investment plans, Mr. Shamik Das, Chief Executive Officer said, "S Tel will invest approx Rs. 360 crores in capital expenditure over the next five years to roll out 3G services in Bihar & Jharkhand, Odisha and Himachal Pradesh. We are presently working out details for raising this sum and are in talks with potential lenders."

Batelco Group, Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Peter Kaliaropoulos stated, "After having launched its operations in record time, S Tel has achieved a new milestone by being part of the inaugural group of operators to have won 3G spectrum in India. Together with our partner in India, Siva Group, we aspire to make S Tel a significant and formidable operator in the country, the third largest and fastest growing mobile market in the world," he added.

In November 2009, S Tel achieved financial closure for its Rs. 2000 crore telecom project and was the first amongst the new operators to do so. Last month, the company became the fastest mobile operator in India to clock the 1 million mark in 'C' circles, having achieved the milestone in just 90 days of operations.

LTE- A Gateway To The Next Generation

Posted: 26 May 2010 03:05 AM PDT

LTE- A Gateway To The Next GenerationAdrian Scrase, Head of 3GPP Mobile Competence Centre shares his view on LTE India Event On 28th May 2010 in New Delhi and at LTE workshop on the 1st June 2010 in Chennai  a event will be held to encourage Regulators, Operators and Manufacturers to be a part of LTE – The most successful mobile broadband Standard.

We will demonstrate that this is not just a new radio technology; there is a whole eco-system – all fully standardized and ready to go.LTE specifications give Operators a way to deliver more speed, more data and a better experience in the most cost effective way.

As discussions move from 'Why LTE' to "When LTE", we will put the Standards experts along side Indian Telecommunications experts to discuss the time-scales for getting this technology in to the hands of Indian users.

There has been a lot of discussion in the 3GPP specification groups on the best migration paths from 3GPP and also non-3GPP networks towards LTE. A massive amount of work has gone in to the fall-back to other 2G and 3G accesses, we will look at that and I expect the discussion on how non 3GPP technologies can migrate to be a good one as the 3GPP leadership explains the work done in that area.

The 3GPP work on LTE is mature, Release 8 of the 3GPP Standard was frozen back in December 2008. So, 3GPP technical working groups have had time to consolidate the Release (8) and to produce a much shorter Release 9 with up-grades to LTE.

In December of 2009 we saw the first Networks in a limited hot-spot type of deployment – but results are extremely promising and industry analysts are predicting 10 operational LTE networks to be launched before the end of 2010.

The 3GPP speakers at the New Delhi event and the Chennai Workshop will have practical experiences to share on the status of LTE roll-outs – both from the Operator view-point and the Manufacturer's.
What will the future bring?

3G mobile standards happened largely without the influence of the Indian telecommunications industry. As LTE evolves in to a 4G technology – the door is open for India to punch at its real weight.   In April 2010 the Cellular Operators Association of India joined 3GPP as a Partner. I hope that this is the beginning of a contribution driven approach towards 3GPP Standards evolution. The Convergence of the cellular Standards around LTE is a serious possibility and India can be in at the beginning of this transformation to an international broadband standard for mobile.

Of the so-called BRIC countries – China has moved towards LTE and the TD-SCDMA groups are all converging on what they call TD-LTE – bringing their requirements in to 3GPP. When we address LTE India (28th May 2010, New Delhi) and the 3GPP Workshop in Chennai (1st June 2010) – We will demonstrate how 3GPP works, how successful the model has become and we will make a call to Indian Industry – Minister, Regulator, Operator and Manufacturer – to participate in Standards and to bring your voice to LTE.

Indian Telecom VAS: A Small Talk

Posted: 26 May 2010 12:33 AM PDT

According to survey VAS has become an integral or we can say a mandatory service for Operators as well as consumers for example CRBT (Caller ring back tone) is the most revenue generating service for Operators also it is the simplest way of a consumer to express himself to others.

Providing latest VAS content(songs, logos, etc) yields to leverage subscribers loyalty and increase in profits to operators while setting the latest released song as CRBT is the yearning of subscriber this is the way both are linked like a centripetal force revolving the operator another catch is driven by DATA & Short Message Services.

In generic terms DATA is coming out to be next revenue clutch for the operator and with the emergence on 3G its potential will be unleashed.

Ok imagine a day when if we are restricted only do peer to peer calling from our mobiles and all else is gone i guess it will make the life stuck for complete world and a smartphone will become a brick (anyway that's not gonna happen) VAS industry is coming up with numerous Applications, Portals, Data App stores  and much more our next Take will be covering different aspects of the MVAS market stay tuned, for current MVAS insight log on to http://telecomtalk.info/10th-take-on-indian-telecom-industry-vas/27089/
