Shab-e-barat – The Night of Accountability Posted: 26 Jul 2010 08:37 PM PDT Shab-e-barat is observed with great reverence and fervor among Muslim communities. It is celebrated as the night of accountability. In their language "Shab" means night and "Barat" means "the night of assignment or commission." It is also called by names: Sob-e-barat, Sab-e-baraat and Boraks Nigh. Shab-e-barat is held either on the 13th day or the 14th day of Shaban, the 8th month in the Muslim calendar. This day happens to be on fifteen days before the beginning of Ramadan. In 2010, Shab-e-barat is tentatively on 28th July. What Shab-e-barat Means to Muslims Some Muslims see this night as the night of good fortune. A popular legend says that on this night Prophets visits house of sincere Muslims and relieves them from their sufferings and grant good fortune. The Accountability According to Muslim teachings, "It is the night of accountability for all believers of Allah. Their performance of last one year in accordance or in the light of the teachings of the Holy Quran and Sunnah is reviewed on this night."
