Sunni Waqf Board to challenge Ayodhya verdict in Supreme Court

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 09:39 AM PDT

Lucknow, Sep.30 : Expressing its dissatisfaction with Ayodhya verdict, as pronounced today by the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow Bench, the Sunni Waqf Board has decided to appeal in the Supreme Court against the Ayodhya verdict delivered today in Lucknow.

The Waqf board, one of the main litigants, on Thursday said it didn't agree with today's decision.

"High Court's formula of one-third land is not acceptable to the Waqf Board and it will appeal against it in the apex court," said Zafaryab Jilani who represented the Waqf Board in court.

Jilani said that the Sunni Board is open to any negotiated settlement on the issue.

Jilani said the Board has time to appeal in the Supreme Court as the judgement orders status quo for the next 90 days.

"The Board will move the apex court after a meeting of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. We are not in hurry as we have 90 days' time to appeal as a matter of right," Jilani was quoted by NDTV as saying.

The Allahabad High Court has ruled that the disputed land should be divided three ways.

The land has been divided between the Hindus and the Muslims (one-third for the Waqf Board, a third for Ram Lalla Virajman, and a third for the Nirmohi Akhara). The judgement says that the disputed site is the birthplace of Lord Ram and that the portion below the central dome under which idols are placed is allotted to Hindus.(ANI)

Allahabad High Court Ayodhya Verdict – Nirmohi Akhara Awarded Land

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 09:37 AM PDT

Nirmohi Akhara (or Nirmohi Akhada) is a group of monks who were doing their daily rituals near the disputed land and claimed that they had been staying there since decades and that the disputed land in Ayodhya belongs to them. This group has came into light in connection with the Ayodhya dispute since 1959, when it filed a title suit claiming that they own the disputed site of Babri mosque. Nirmohi Akhara intially filed a suit in January 1885. They requested the consent of the sub-judge of Faizabad to construct a temple for the Hindu god Rama, called the Ram Chabutra, very adjacent to the Babri mosque which was constructed by the Mughal emperor Babar in 1528 (16th century). But the permission was denied as the sub-judge felt that two different religious construction with so much proximity could lead to the public disorder. And since then, the group has been claiming their land in the form of suits to construct the temple there. On September 30, 2010, the Allahabad court three-panel bench has given a verdict allotting a 1/3rd part of the dispute land to the Nirmohi Akhara group. The Nirmohi Akhada is now headed by Mahant Bhaskar Das.
