Islamic New Year
Islam has a lunar based calendar with 354 days. The New Year date also changes every year as the Islamic Calendar is 11 days shorter than the solar calendar. Maal Hijra or Islamic New Year is celebrated on the first day of Muharram (first Islamic month). The word Muharram also means respect. It is more of a cultural event than a New Year celebration. People welcome the New Year with peace and prayers.

New Year celebrated by Muslims is not a gala affair rather it’s a quite and sober celebration. People gather in mosques and dargahs to offer special prayers. Muslims celebrate this day to pay homage to Prophet Muhammad. The most important part is to tell the hijra (Muhammad’s flight from Medina to Mecca). This story is also broadcast on radio. Maal Hijra or the Islamic New Year is spent on reflecting how one’s leading his or her life and their own mortality.

The most recent trend of exchanging New Year cards and gifts have been witnessed in many Muslim communities. However, Shia Muslims do not take part in New Year activities. They commemorate the Battle of Karbala and observe it as a month of mourning. This commemoration ends on the tenth day of Muharram called Ashurah. Similarly, Sunni Muslims do not take part in the New Year traditions as on this day first Caliph Abu Bakr died.

Remembrance of Muharram
Remembrance of Muharram has become an important day for the Shias. People enact the scenes of the Battle of Karbala in mosques. At some places, people clad in black dresses. They recite sorrowful poems in the memory of the martyrdom of Imran Hussain. Many males beat their chests or walk barefoot over the burning coal to remember the sufferings of Hussain. Loud cries of congregation can be heard which reflects their inability to save Hussain from the torture and brutalities.

Later, food and other things of survival are distributed to the poor. The first nine days of Muharram are spent in making an exact copy of martyr’s tomb with bamboo and paper. On the tenth day, Ashura, processions are carried out through the streets with the beautifully embellished tombs (also called taziyas). What is Muharram ? | Muharram and Ashura | When is Al-Hijra / Muharram in 2010?

Muharram (Arabic: محرم) is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is one of the four sacred months of the year in which fighting is prohibited. Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, Muharram moves from year to year when compared with the Gregorian calendar.
Muharram is so called because it is unlawful to fight during this month; the word is derived from the word haram, meaning “forbidden”. It is held to be the most sacred of all the months, excluding Ramadan. Some Muslims fast during these days. The tenth day of Muharram is called Yaumu-l ‘Ashurah, which is known by Shia Muslims as ‘the day of grief’.
Some Sunni Muslims fast during this day, because Prophet Musa A.S (Moses) and his ummah got victory against Pharoah on this 10th day of moharram; according to them Prophet Muhammad (sallalahu alayhi wa sallam) asked Muslims to fast on this day, and also a day extra either before or after, so that they are not similar to Jews. Since jews use to fast for 1 day due to the same reason.
Fasting differs among the Muslim groupings; mainstream Shia Muslims stop eating and drinking during sunlight hours and do not eat until late afternoon. Sunni Muslims also fast during Muharram for the first 10 days of Muharram, just the tenth day or on both the ninth and tenth days; the exact term depending on the individual. Shia Muslims do so to replicate the sufferings of Husayn ibn Ali on the day of Ashurah. Some Shia Muslims, especially in India, go further in their attempts of replication, including self-flagellation (also see Matam).

The word “Muharram” is often considered synonymous with the event of Ashura. Ashura, which literally means the “Tenth” in Arabic, refers to the tenth day of Muharram. It is well-known because of historical significance and mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali.
Shias start the mourning from the 1st night of Muharram and continue for 2 months and 8 days. However the first days are the most important since these were the days where Imam Husayn and his family and followers (consisting of 72 people, including women, children and aged people) were killed by Yazid I.
Muhaarram is also celebrated by Dawoodi Bohras in the same way as Shias.They practice prayers on the sayings of the present dawah of Bohras, Syedna Mohammad Burhanuddin Saheb. On the tenth day of Muharrum, they pray for Husayn till the magrib namaz. When the namaz ends, Husayn is considered shahid by Yazid.

Al-Hijra / Muharram in 2010 will start on Tuesday, the 7th of December and will continue for 29 days until Tuesday, the 4th of January.

Note that in the Muslim calander, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Muslims will celebrate Al-Hijra / Muharram on the sunset of Monday, the 6th of December.

Although Al-Hijra / Muharram is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. This difference means Al-Hijra / Muharram moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year. The date of Al-Hijra / Muharram may also vary from country to country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not.

The dates provided here are based on the dates adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America for the celebration of Al-Hijra / Muharram. Note that these dates are based on astronomical calculations to affirm each date, and not on the actual sighting of the moon with the naked eyes. This approach is accepted by many, but is still being hotly debated.

chikku bukku review

Debutant Manikandan shot some portions in 'Dhaam Dhoom' after the sudden demise of director Jeeva. The protégé now makes his debut directorial with Chikku Bhukku. The film was promoted on the lines of being a romantic travelogue. Naturally, the film takes us through different locations across the globe from London to Chikka Mangalore and Coorg in Karnataka and Karaikudi. The journey is a sweet memory, but the slow paced screenplay turns out to be a spoiler.
The film opens with a backdrop of 1985 where Sekar (Arya) is penning his memories in a diary. Immediately the film is fast-forwarded to 2010. The location is London and we come across Arjun (again played by Arya), a successful DJ. Then there is Anu (Shriya Charan) brought up in the foreign country, but values the Tamil culture very well. They are on their way to Tamil Nadu their own reasons and situations urge them to travel together. On the way, Arjun glimpses through the diary of his father Sekar and the love stories of different generation are shown simultaneously with an unexpected but a happy climax.

The fight for reducing call rates is on with telecom operators as this is the only way for new telecom operators to gain market share.

Freecharge.in an online prepaid mobile recharge service analysed 100,000 transactions made on the site over September and October 2010 to find out the various patterns of prepaid mobile recharge.

Key take-away:

* Vodafone users spend the highest on prepaid talk-times at around 15% more than the overall avg. of Rs. 128.

* Aircel customers spent the least at around 21% lower than over all avg.

* Karnataka is the highest spending circle – around 16% more than the avg.

* Avg. ticket size on credit card transactions is 34% higher than Netbanking transactions and 83% higher than Debit card transactions.

* SBI customers prefer using debit cards for online transactions whereas ICICI customers use their net-banking account.

Currently around 1% of all mobile recharges happen online but this share is growing rapidly with increasing internet connectivity and the masses finding it convenient to make utility transactions from the comfort of their home.
